HURRICANE GUS; RADAR SUMMARY 8/1/08

hE PROBABLY will make landfall right at Noon in Southern Louisiana.
This is the image I just pulled off intellicast.com.

The red box? TOR WATCH (Tornado watch)
The WHITE ARROWS: wind direction
"PIB" and "HBG": very near where I live, "HBG" = "Hattiesburg".
"JAN" = Jackson
"MSY" = New Orleans

MESO means that there is a cloud complex bearing spinning winds---that could maybe drop a tornado.
"TVS" MEANS THERE IS A TORNADO in the clouds...."Tornadic Vortex Signature".

We're all good where I am-obviously still have power, and for the time being, Gus has just dumped much rain on us. It reminds me of a standard 'set in' storm.
Winds may pick up later.

The sanitation department is even running the garbage route today-Dad just called from town and asked me to put the garbage cans out!!!
(I got SOAKED!).

He and Mom are in Hattiesburg checkin' in on her Dad---who lives in a trailer.

I understood the landfall was near Cocodrie but I've no idea where that is. Is it near you? I also read it isn't as strong as predicted but things like that can feel different when you're in it.

YVI: Gus...Landfall

COCODRIE, La

I put a "T" on the map so you'll know where I am. the "A" is landfall for Gus.

So it's about 300 miles from me. But people there let my Dad use thier marina to go fishing. Look up "Breton Sound". Those guys are in St. Bernard Parish; Landfall was in Terrabonne Parish.

I just put a plexiglas cannister outside on my back patio to see how full it will be of rain by tonight at sundown.
I'll let you know. ;-)
It have rained ALL DAY here.

Allright, that's not too close!

Too bad the cam isn't working on the site of 'Breton Sound', but that was to be expected.
Any word from the people you know over there? Are they allright?
At least i'm happy that you are OK. Rain all day... out here we've had 3 days without rain, that was a nice change hahaha. Let me know how much you got! Always fun to hear!

YVI: slowing down to a crawl!!!!!!

And between Alexandria, La, and Natchez, MS---some power grid/power plant/MASSIVE line took a hit, and Natchez MS is without power.

They'l be back up soon.

Gus is moving more toward Arkansas---Jorgi and even Spin-Doc might see some rain from this, if they haven't already.
He's STILl raining on us at 2300hr....I decided to let the plastic cannister I set out side sit there 'til the a.m. It'll perhaps have filled up and over flowed. IF that, I know we got more than 8 inches of rain from Gustav.

Being without power sucks. It't not just not being able to do some stuff but everything in the fridge/freezer..... ouch.

Well, if rain is all Jorgi and Spin-doc get, they can't complain!

I'm really curious what amount of caught rain you'll end up with!

I set the cannister outside on 1 September at 1200h.

It stayed outside all night last night, and I measured rain this morning at 1130h.

6.75 inches fell between 1200 yesterday and 1130 today.
That's a good bit of water!!!!!!
And it's still raining.

Gus was a Cat 3...

He has slowed down.
That can be BAD for low-lying areas because he gets more chance to dump bucket and bucket of rain.
It's raining here again. I've been soaked TWICE today.
Got out in it to take out the garbage as the trucks will make their run today.

Looking out my French door, it is steady raining.
I wish I had a rain gauge that wouldn't shatter. I'd put it out there.
May use a tall plastic cup.
