I've played Open-handed for

I've played Open-handed for 7 years (as long as I've played drums and that's because of Simon) and this is truly my dreamkit. I've always condsidered this to be the best kit ever. JP, you are one lucky guy!

Playing Open Handed

It makes so much more sense then playing cross handed. It forces your brain to try and seperate the limbs moreso I think. It allows you far more options and ease around the kit.

And yes right Robin, I am one lucky guy (self admitted spoiled bastard too).

Cheers my friend

Open-Handed Playing

Hello, I think you're absolutely RIGHT !! Simon was the first drummer who inspires me to play open-handed et I'm nearly ambidextrous now (only behind the drums). I play different things (musically) depending on the hand which is playing the ride/hi-hat/china, it's almost like being a different drummer when I play right-handed or when I play left-handed. I like also mix the two together to create new and different rhythms on the drumset. My kit is a right-handed one with a symmetric set-up of cymbals.
Among other ambidextrous drummers, I especially like Carter Beauford who has, according to me, a very original way to play the hi-hat (with his left hand or with the two hands). And Dennis Chambers is good too, he plays wonderful grooves with the two hands mooving between the snare and the hi-hat (alternating cross-handed and open-handed playings).
See you later.

Great Stuff J.B.

Carter is fabulous. I could watch him all day. His great, along with the amazing talent make him so much fun to see and listen to. Dennis is amazing also. Did you know with all of the chops that Dennis has he cannot read a lick of music? He did a recording live George Clinton and the P Funk Allstars on which his funky grooves are just mind blowning.

Louie Bellson said in an Modern Drummer interview a zillion years ago, that one of the things he did to develope his hand independence was to do as many things with his left as possible that he'd do right handed. Eating, brushing his teeth, just about anything. Simon said in essence the same type thing in something I read, some time ago. Memory is failing where I saw this.

Anyways, good stuff!

Hands: Independence

After I injured my left hand (dominant hand) working in college, I had to learn to write and brush my teeth, and even EAT left-handed for about six months).

That helped my organ playing more than anything else i could have ever done.

I suppose, somewhere down the road, it'll benefit my playing drums as well.
I can still write "rightie" but it's WEIRD to do!
I used to sit for 2 hours taking notes in class like that....it forces the brain to really work.

Thanks !

Thank you for your fast answer !
Simon talked about using the left hand instead of the right (saying that brushing one's teeth with left hand is pretty difficult !) in the Zildjian Day videotape. This is a great tape with Trilok Gurtu, Gregg Bissonette and Dennis Chambers. Simon plays a wonderful solo on it, you can't afford to not have this one (I don't know if it has been released on DVD yet).
I must leave you now because...
I'm going to Paris today to see TOTO !!!
It's a GREAT day, I'm very excited and eager about this evening, curious to see Lee with the band, and feel lucky about the fact they choose tonight to release the DVD (It will be the second live capture at Le Zenith, Paris, the first one being with Jeff).
I will tell you about the concert tomorrow !

It's not so much the set of drums that I'm drooling over here-but the Zildjian consist above it!
