Went to the Baked Potato last night and got to see Mike Landau, Greg Leisz, Trevor & Dustin Boyer. Pretty amazing show! I don't get out much and my budget is pretty tight, so I was especially lucky to have been the guest of my pal Chuck Kavooras. Mike is one of those cats who seem to just play consistently amazing(as is Luke) and he was on it. The reason Chuck has wanted me to go that night was to see Greg and meet him. Greg is an amazing slide/Pedal steel player and he was playing some amazing stuff, stretching the boundaries of what most people think these instrument can do. This was not a country music gig! His style worked very well with Mike's providing chord pads and rhythm behind Mike, unison/harmony on melodies and some great solos. got to meet Greg, Justin and Trevor on the break. I told Mike that after seeing him, I was gonna go home and put my axes on ebay. He responded with a grin, "What ya got?". Think I'm gonna keep 'em but I need to head for the woodshed. Not suprisingly the audience was filled with musicians, and being with Chuck, I got to meet most of them. Very cool evening! structure and stylewise very different from the music I generally play or listen to, but very cool. What is really amazing is how these guys have been able to transcend the cliches that categorize their music and play in a realm of true expression.Got transported by the sounds and I came back with a million ideas. Im a lucky guy. Thanks Chuck...

JoeG! WOW!

Man, having heard family on dobro and mandolin from pretty closed quarters, I would think the Spud would be a PERFECT place to hear a little pedal steel!

Landau's been rockin' the industry hard for MANY years.

You lucky dawg, you!
If you can find that clip of Landau, I'd appreciate the post-up!

Glad you had fun!!

THE TATER WITH JOEG

ya joeg man@@ the tater!!!
so you had a blast eh??
how could you not with decent players all around landau et all.. and great tunage in front of you.i remember last year when we emailed each other about something and we talked bout the tater & you mentioned it was close to ya..
well i was thinking sh.. id be there every night.
but finances have a way of preventing that eh??
10 to 20 spot a spud if u are chowing down at some point and a cover and a cpl of brewskies.
but man dont you feel good when you are there and checking these cats do their magic right there in front of ya. like greg on pedal steel doing outta the norm playing for that instrument.
thats where great rushes come from.
when you mentioned the boyers i thought of the boyer brothers who played with david bendeth but i dont think they are the same guys...maybe the sons or something..
anyways joeg gladd you buzzed and hope your own playing benefits from seing that gig.
post again if you catch some of the other amazing players that are always at the tater.
what about chuck?/ does he have material out??
take care man & all the best.
have a better day!!!

Chuck...

Decent isn't the word...outstanding is more like it. I'm a very lucky guy. Chuck Kavooras is a great guy and a guitarist known primarily for his slide work. You can here a good example of this on Mike Landau's Live CD on the tune Peaceful Ride. He's a great player and most of all he's a true friend...

I am a lucky bastard..Here's a clip of Greg playing Dobro w/ Bill Frisell.. this is not what he played with Mike, but will give you an idea of where he's at skill-wise. Its also very beautiful music. Look for a good Landau clip later,, I'm sure I can find one...

Hey Joe, this is really

Hey Joe, this is really great stuff, thanks for showing me this! Man, he can play!!! (but I don't need to tell YOU that) It's also great to see just him and his guitar from beginning to end, I always love to watch the fingers of a guitarplayer (or bassplayer).

What I don't like in the second vid is the drums, it's undoubtedly (is that a correct word?) a great drummer but for me it's too much, it takes away some of Mike's playing instead of adding something. (Or am I saying something really horrible now??? in that case forgive me)

But thanks for showing me Mike, I really love it!!! :-)))

Hugs from Holland!

there's a great clip up of

there's a great clip up of Mike & Steve that is amazing!! I understand what you're saying re: the dummer, but its a style thing so who knows .. and his ENERGY is there.

Yvonne's picture

That's true, can't say

That's true, can't say anything wrong about his energy. And maybe it's just because Mike's playing is new to me and I wanted to hear it without being disturbed. But hey, I'm not used to talk about music so maybe I'm just blabbering.

It's brilliant. It's fragile

Greg plays a WIDE range of

Greg plays a WIDE range of styles. this piece with Bill Frisell is somewhat ethereal, the stuff with Landau was ELECTRIC and definitely rockin'..No clips on Youtube of him playing that way, but there's alot of cool stuff w/Bill, as well as more folk/country stuff with Karen Landau(Mike's wife), not to mention KD Laing, Joe Cocker,etc... got me back at the woodshed..

Hey Jeanne, Happy Saturday!

Hey Jeanne, Happy Saturday! yeah it was! Not planning on dumping them. Its just amazing how far you can go. For me, I play mostly for myself. I love to perform, but I don't get to do that too often. Everyday though, I can have some time with a guitar and play something that pleases me, try something new or figure something out. Having this outlet is the gift that my creator has shared with me.
